It amuses me how Man Utd has set the transfer record on three separate occasions, and then Utd supporters have the gall to criticize Chelsea for "buying" the title.
I think that answer to that one, Adam, is the word 'separate'.
United may have spent big, but those signings were one of a few additions to the squad.
Chelsea on the other hand spent a fortune in a very short period of and then, low and behold, won the title.
I think the claim is a valid one, personally.
What about van Nistelrooy in 2001?
He was bought for 30 million Euro's, but I don't know if it was a record back then, or how much it was in GBP.
I don't disagree that Chelsea "bought" the title, I'm just saying that United fans really have no right to complain about other clubs spending large sums of money on transfers given their own club's spending history (which has been rather extravagant, as evidenced by this list which doesn't even count guys like Wayne Rooney or Juan Sebastian Veron).
Chelsea didn't "buy" the title they signed very good, gifted player. Admittedly if they had had less money thgey wouldn't have been able to, but they used their money very well to add quality to the squad.
Also I remember how smug and brilliant wenger felt when he got £22m for "le sulk" who diodn't want to play and was crap for R. Madrid when he moved.
What about Bergkamp though. Best Buy ever!

Smart - I don't remember Kevin Keegan being the first £500,000 player in Britain, I just remember the fact that he was going to play in [gasp] West Germany being the big deal at the time...
Sp3ktor - did you actually work those out using a proper financial formula of some sort?!? If you did, well done! That's amazing - seeing how expensive those players are in today's money. Shearer at £20.6 million? Bargain!
Sven - According to Wikipedia, he cost Man United £19 million in April 2001, and they claim it was a British record transfer at the time. I'm here to tell you, though, that Nicolas Anelka's move from Arsenal to Real Madrid (as shown on our list) was worth £22.5 million and happened two years earlier.
